Trailer Leasing in San Diego: What to Know Before You Lease

San Diego businesses lease trailers for a lot of different reasons: moving freight from the port or across the border, staging inventory for retail, storing materials at a job site, or adding capacity without buying equipment. Whatever your reason, a few decisions shape whether the lease works well. Here's what to know before you start.

What you can lease

Most San Diego customers are choosing between four types:

  • Dry vans (48' and 53'), the standard enclosed trailer for general freight
  • Liftgate trailers (40'), for loading and unloading where there's no dock
  • Flatbeds, for oversized or irregular loads
  • Storage trailers, which are delivered to your lot and stay there

If you're not sure which fits, our guide to dry vans, liftgates, and flatbeds walks through the differences, and you can browse everything on our fleet page.

How lease terms work

You generally have three options: a short-term rental, a longer-term lease, or a lease with a purchase option, which gives you the choice to buy the trailer later. Which one is right depends mostly on how predictable your volume is and how long you'll need the equipment. We break that tradeoff down in Leasing vs. Buying a Trailer.

Why location matters in San Diego

If any of your freight crosses the border, the yard you lease from matters more than it might seem. Our San Diego location is at 6682 Gateway Park Dr, in the Otay Mesa area, and we handle trailer inspections for cross-border trailers right at our San Diego and Calexico locations. That keeps the process local instead of sending you somewhere else to get a trailer ready.

Even if you never cross the border, proximity means faster delivery and pickup, and fewer surprises if you need a swap or a repositioning.

Delivery, tracking, and maintenance

These are the details that separate a smooth lease from a frustrating one, and they're worth asking about with any provider:

  • Who delivers? Our own trucks and drivers handle delivery and pickup, so there's no third-party carrier in the middle.
  • Can you see where the trailer is? Every trailer we lease ships with satellite GPS tracking already active.
  • What happens when it needs service? Our mobile maintenance team comes to your yard or site, so you're not hauling a trailer back to us to get it looked at.
  • Where does it sit between uses? If you don't want to tie up your own lot, our parking and drop yard service offers secure space with 24/7 surveillance, controlled access, and easy freeway access.

Questions to ask any leasing company

Whoever you lease from, get clear answers to these before you sign:

  1. What's included in the quoted price, and what isn't?
  2. How are delivery and pickup handled and scheduled?
  3. What does maintenance look like, and who pays for what?
  4. What are the options if my needs change partway through the term?
  5. How quickly can I get a replacement if something goes wrong?
